Abstract: Visiting Assistant Professor of Animal Behavior Laela Sayigh will present snapshots of some of her current research areas on marine mammal bioacoustics and communication, in the hopes of sparking interest in student collaborations. Species under study include dolphins, pilot whales, beluga whales, fin whales, blue whales, and gray seals, with topics including developing an acoustic mass stranding alert system for dolphins, studying mother-calf communication in dolphins, describing seal song structure, and quantifying effects of noise on large whale communication.

Biography: Laela Sayigh, Visiting Assistant Professor of Animal Behavior, received her B.A. in biology and environmental studies, with a minor in music, from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution joint program, where her research focused on development and functions of individually specific signature whistles of bottlenose dolphins. Her research focuses on social behavior and communication of cetaceans (whales and dolphins).
