Meeting Notes

Introductions & Food

Recap for Sept 21 Draw the Line and 5 College Divestment Meeting
Marched all over Amherst and to the TD Bank office
Great brainstorming sesh after with 5Colleges: ideas like travelling
?pants? for all the college?s divestment campaigns

Overview and Explanation of Divestment
Every college has an endowment fund which is money they get from
investments in companies and corporations. Divestment means not having
money come from certain companies and corporations. In the 80?s when
there was a campaign to end Apartheid in South Africa, divestment was
a powerful tactic used by college students to end support for and
therefore weaken Apartheid. The climate change movement is using this
tactic once more ? college students now are making their schools
divest from fossil fuel companies. Hampshire has already divested, and
we are now supporting the Five College?s campaigns for divestment.
