[Libri] new Libri list

All:

I have created our new list, via Google Groups, which takes the place of
the earlier one (libri at lists.hampshire.edu), *effective* *now*.

As before, it is a forum in which members can engage in discussion of
the history and art of the book and literary/print culture, and announce
events in those fields: primarily, but not exclusively in the Pioneer
Valley of western Massachusetts and the greater northeast area (use your
discretion in determining what is likely to be of real interest to the
majority of subscribers). However, switching the platform to Google
Groups should make use of the list simpler and more transparent.

We will begin by trying this out as a public list: Only members can
post to the list or access its archived messages on the Web, but anyone
can join and become a member (if spam becomes a problem, we can revisit
this decision).

*Please visit this site* to join:

<http://groups.google.com/group/libri-list?hl=en>

It is best and simplest if we employ this "opt-in" method:

. Inactive members need simply not respond, if they wish to drop out (we
have had a number of "unsubscribes" in recent weeks, e.g. from people
who had moved away from the area or are otherwise no longer engaged in
local book matters). They will receive no further emails from the old
list or the new one.
. Active members can consider anew and set their own preferences
(nickname, e-mail address, delivery options [e.g. each message vs.
digest], etc.)
. *Just remember*: the address under which you subscribe is the one
under which you will receive messages and from which you must post. If
you already have a Google/gmail account, you may find it simplest to use
that one for the sake of integration (I have done so), but that, of
course, is up to you.

I have also made public my own *Google Calendar* for book-related events:

http://tiny.cc/c1oiy

Because we want this to remain a public calendar rather than one
accessible only to subscribed members (given the current constraints of
the Google system, I would have to add the e-mail address of every
individual member and keep that list constantly updated), we ask that
you send announcements to any of the list managers at the Five Colleges
(addresses available on the Groups members page), who can then post
them. Provisionally:

. Hampshire: Jim Wald
. UMass: Jim Kelly, Joe Black, Phil Palmer, Steve Harris,
. Amherst: Mike Kelly
. Smith: Martin Antonetti
. Mount Holyoke: Tatiana Ginsberg

If you would like to receive authorization to post to the calendar on
your own, just send a request to one of the list managers (again,
remembering to use the same e-mail address under which you are subscribed).

We hope that this listserve makes it easier for us to share what is
important, and thereby, to strengthen the already vibrant book community
in the Pioneer Valley.

In the meantime, happy Thanksgiving!

Jim Wald
