BIBLES: EIGHT CENTURIES OF TREASURES FROM THE SMITH COLLEGE LIBRARIES
Lecture by Mark Morford
Thursday, October 27, 2005 at 4:30 pm
Neilson Library Browsing Room, Smith College, Northampton, MA

Professor Mark Morford will give an illustrated talk about the Smith College Mortimer Rare Book Room's remarkable collection of manuscript and printed bibles. These range fram a 13th-century bible written in Germany to the folio bible designed and illustrated by Barry Moser and printed in 1997. Some seventy of these bibles, and about thirty Greek New Testaments, are almost a complete series of printed bibles from Gutenberg's bible of the 1450s (Smith owns a single leaf) to the Moser Pennyroyal-Caxton bible. Professor Morford is Emeritus Professor of Classics at the University of Virginia and is currently the Salloch Fellow in the Mortimer Rare Book Room. He was Kennedy Professor of Renaissance Studies at Smith College in 1995.
