Print master and Book artist Brian Cohen comes to us from Bridge Press in Vermont to present a workshop:
Drypoint from the Landscape
Saturday & Sunday, Saturday & Sunday, May 17 & 18, 10 AM - 4 PM
$175 + materials ($25)
Participants will complete an edition of prints from metal plates worked entirely without acids, using a traditional technique called drypoint. In drypoint, a student draws directly on a metal plate, creating lines and textures that will hold ink when printed. The drypoint medium is a wonderful means of making a drawing directly from observation into a print, without toxic chemicals or technical obstacles. The softness, variety, and warmth of the drypoint line is uniquely expressive among all printmaking media. We may use other traditional means of altering the metal surface, such as roulette and engraving, and explore materials to roughen the plate not usually associated with intaglio (metal plate prints), such as sandpaper, stamping, and hammering. Participants will also learn to lighten or soften areas of the plate with the scraper and burnisher. The starting point for our imagery in this class will be the landscape in the surrounding area, though participants will continue to develop their plates in the studio, printing frequently to assess the development of the image. We will also emphasize the skills of hand-wiping a plate before printing, and will explore variations in color and collage printing.

Books: Basics and Beyond
with guest artist Sheryl Jaffe
Thursday evening, May 29, 6-9 PM
$50 + materials ($20)
Learn creative variations on basic book structures. Simple but ingenious, the piano hinge, the star book, accordion concertina and ways of combining multiple signatures will all be taught in this one evening. All tools and materials needed will be supplied, just bring an open mind and an experimental spirit.

Mixed Media Books
with guest artist Alison Williams
Intro: June 25, 6-8 PM, Workshop: June 30-July 3, 10 AM-4 PM
$375 + materials ($50)
Books are magical things, they're opened and stories unfold - images and words, tales, poems and memories. Books are made to be handled and re-handled, paged through over and over until you know a story forwards and backwards.. This course combines book making with mixed media work. You can make a book from glass, paper, board, photos, paintings, fabric, prints or a combination of all of these media and more. We'll start with a visit to Smith College Rare Book room to study some artists' books and then work with your ideas to create a finished mixed media book. It is recommended that you bring as many materials as you can to work with, anything goes. We'll provide some papers, means of fastening, threads, glues and other materials as well as lots of advice and help to make your book come together. We'll walk you through some forms of folding and binding, as well as offer help with making images.
