Greetings to all.

For those of you making a list of things to do instead of shoveling snow or
marking papers, you might add this:

At 10:30 on Tuesday evening, the "Independent Lens" program on Public
Television in Springfield (Channel 57) will broadcast for the first time:

"'Loaded Gun: Life, Death, and Dickinson,' writer-director Jim Walpaw's
idiosyncratic search for the essence of cryptic poet Emily Dickinson
(1830-86)."

It's a very strange, quirky film, not at all like the formulaic treatments
of American culture so typical of PBS in recent years. It manages to be
offbeat and silly, and yet at the same time, to convey a serious message
about literature and history.

On behalf of the Hampshire College Center for the Book, I wish you a smooth
end to the semester and pleasant holidays.

We will announce coming events‹including the continuation of our film series
and the recommencement of our seminar‹in January.

Jim Wald
