Print, Power and Persuasion:
Graphic design in Germany 1890-1945

Exhibition

September 20 - November 17, 2002
Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design
Providence, R.I.
For information call 401-454-6500 or visit: www.risd.edu/museum.cfm

Exhibit Opening: September 19, 5 - 9pm

The exhibition traces the emergence of innovative graphic design in Germany
in the early twentieth century when industrialization brought an enormous
rise of mass-circulation advertising, magazines, and packaging. Organized by
The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, Miami Beach, Florida, it
illuminates the rich history of modern design with more than fifty posters
and a selection of books, journals, brochures, and other printed materials
from the Wolfsonian's collection.

Between 1890 and 1945, many German designers, including Peter Behrens,
Lucian Bernhard, Herbert Bayer, and John Heartfield, invigorated the design
reform movements of the nineteenth century with innovative concepts from
avant-garde art. They worked in politically turbulent times, and the
international exchange of ideas during the Weimar Republic was squashed as
Hitler rose to power and National Socialism clamped down on most progressive
artistic activity.

Print, Power, and Persuasion presents new ways of thinking about design and
its contribution to modernity. Was graphic design an art form or a form of
commerce? Was it moral or immoral? Did it serve nationalistic or
internationalist ends? The exhibition's curators, Jeremy Aynsley of the
Royal College of Art, London, and Marianne Lamonaca of the Wolfsonian argue
for a complex history of design serving different expectations within
different contexts.

The book, Graphic Design in Germany 1890-1945, authored by Dr. Aynsley and
published by Thames & Hudson, accompanies the show.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the RISD Museum and Goethe-Institut
Inter Nationes Boston present the film series.
