Dear Colleagues,
Welcome back!
Although I am sure you have plenty to keep track of during these last days
of summer vacation, I wanted to bring a few matters to your attention.
(1) We are working to update our website, but already, I can take pleasure
in announcing the launching of our new mailing list.
Libri is the new discussion forum for all aspects of the world of the book
in the Pioneer Valley, sponsored by the Hampshire College Center for the
Book.
You should have received an automated welcome message containing technical
information a short time ago. (Please ignore any "unsubscribe" messages
that you received; they were just part of a test of the system.) Here, I
would like to add a few words of further explanation.
"Libri" is a full-fledged listserve. It will continue to provide you with
news of our programs and events, but it can also serve (if that is our
desire) as an open discussion forum for any subject having to do with the
world of the book. You will also have various options for configuring your
account. Messages will be archived.
A few things to note:
(*) At present, the list is "unmoderated," that is: Anyone sending a message
to
libri at lists.hampshire.edu
can post anything, which will then go to all members. I think it is better
to keep things open, at least at the start. If the list becomes burdened
with trivia, then we can consider other approaches, but a modicum of
discretion on the part of all users should suffice to keep things satisfying
for all.
Note: One way to manage the flow of mail is to select an option that
provides you with a digest of correspondence rather than separate copies of
each message.
(*) The list should (if all is in order) be set to a default that sends your
reply only to the author of the message to which you are replying rather
than the entire list. This tends to cut down on the inadvertent and
therefore often embarrassing sharing of such private information as grocery
lists, vile invective, and plans for adulterous trysts (all of which, as we
know, turn up from time to time in such discussion forums).
If you wish to reply to the list as a whole, as will often be the case,
simply select "reply to all" (or the equivalent command) from your own mail
program.
(*) Just a reminder that general information about the mailing list is
available at:
http://lists.hampshire.edu/mailman/listinfo/libri
(2) If you would like to publicize book-related events, you may do so by
sending them to the list, but you can also reach a wider audience by
submitting them for posting on our web calendar. Just go to
http://webevent.hampshire.edu/cgi-bin/webevent.cgi?cmd=opencal&cal=cal9&
Click on the "add event" button at the upper right of the calendar, and
enter the relevant information.
(3) We are working out our fall event schedule.
Tenatative seminar dates should be set soon, although the topics have not
yet been decided. If you would like to suggest a reading or present your
work, please let us know.
Some dates to reserve for larger public events:
* 3 October (late afternoon): Public lecture by Simon Winchester (author of
_The Madman and the Professor_) at the University
* 3 October: Massachusetts Books Awards (in Worcester)
* 9 November (evening): play reading by Peter Wortsman (NYU), in
commemoration of Kristallnacht
* 11 November (4:00 p.m.) Public lecture by Peter Wortsman, "Don't Burn What
You Don't Understand!: How a Christian Scholar Helped Save the Talmud and
Other Hebrew Books from the Flames of the Inquisition"
* 22 November: Opening of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art
Further information will follow. In some cases, details are already
available at:
http://webevent.hampshire.edu/cgi-bin/webevent.cgi?cmd=opencal&cal=cal9&
(4) We are sponsoring several fall courses, details of which will follow in
a separate message.
Thanks you for your interest in our programs. We look forward to seeing you
soon.
Jim Wald
(for the Center for the Book)
