Hi friends,

----You are receiving this e-mail because you are on the Hampshire College Jewish Student Union listserv. If you wish to be removed from this list, please reply to gns14 with that request----

Yom Kippur is approaching and our Rabbi Ellen has brought us an opportunity for a really special way to spend the holiday.

We will be driving down to Washington DC on Tuesday, September 22nd to attend a truly transformative service in Lincoln park. This is happening because the Pope is visiting DC at that time for a joint meeting with Congress regarding climate change and global inequality. Faith communities across the globe are coming together in response to the Pope's encyclical to build the climate movement and boldly address the state of emergency our planet and species is in.

Please read this excerpt from the Facebook event page:

"Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, a fast day for seeking both Atonement and At-Onement. At this moment in history, we humans are in need of atonement for the ways in which we have desecrated the Earth; this desecration is the result of our lack of at-Onement – our separation from one another, from all living beings, and from the Earth. This year, Yom Kippur falls immediately prior to Pope Francis’s unprecedented address on September 24 to a joint session of Congress.

We offer this Yom Kippur service as an invitation to the Jewish community, along with people of all faiths, to come together, acknowledging our profound need for interconnection and atonement. This service will be part of a series of faith-based events planned for the week of September 24 in support of Pope Francis."

All Hampshire students are invited to join us in the journey to this event. We are still figuring out transportation, and accommodations can likely be made for anyone who wishes to come.

We will be leaving at 10:30AM on Tuesday, Sept. 22nd, spending the day in the city on Wednesday and departing that night. We will arrive back on campus ridiculously late/early Thursday moring in order to attend our Thursday classes.

Since Hampshire has cancelled all classes in observance of Yom Kippur on Wednesday, the only classes we will be missing are our Tuesday classes (unless they're before we leave at 10:30AM).

This is going to be a really exciting event! We may be the only college students there and it's super cool that we'll be participating and sharing with this community. It will be a challenging trip, with many of us fasting and lots of walking, but together we can make it smooth and amazing!

IF YOU WANT TO GO: Please e-mail Ellen at ebSA@hampshire.edu ASAP so we can plan accordingly.

Unsure and want to learn more? E-mail me or Ellen with questions.
