For Ashkenazic Jews, although Hebrew was <I><SPAN style="font-style:italic">loshn koydesh, “</SPAN></I>the holy tongue,” Yiddish was <I><SPAN style="font-style:italic">mame loshn, </SPAN></I>the “mother tongue,” the idiom of the women’s sphere and the spoken language of the home, the marketplace and everyday life.
