An attempt to pressure the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to
divest <br>
from Israel was launched this past Wednesday. <br><br>
This is a dangerous movement that makes irresponsible allegations, places
the <br>
blame for the current conflict and the plight of the Palestinians solely
on <br>
Israel, and seeks to punish and delegitimize the State of
Israel.<br><br>
Those who hurl accusations at Israel must be answered. <br><br>
Our students need to know that there are faculty who care deeply about
<br>
Israel, and can serve as much-needed role models. I am hoping that this
will <br>
energize and strenghten those who have long felt that defending Israel
<br>
against outrageous, humiliating calumnies is a lost cause.
<br><br>
Moreover, because UMass is a public institution, the divestment issue is
not <br>
limited to the campus alone. It is an issue for the citizens of the
entire <br>
Commonwealth, and anyone who cares about higher education.<br><br>
Please join in signing the petition against divestment from Israel, and
<br>
please circulate this letter as you see fit.<br><br>
