Dear colleagues (with apologies for cross-posting),
We have an unusual opportunity to hear from two of the leading figures
in the documentation and revival of Polish-Jewish culture. I hope that
you will be able to attend, and to bring this event to the attention of
your students and other interested colleagues. Because of the
constraints of our visitors' travel schedule, I finally had to arrange
this all for one evening, so if you are able to attend only one of the
two presentations, by all means feel free to do so.
Best,
Jim
Dual event on Polish Jews, Culture, and the Holocaust
Thursday, October 15
Franklin Patterson Hall, East Lecture Hall
5:30 p.m. Talk by Yiddish scholar Anna Rozenfeld
6:30-7:00: break for refreshments
7:00: Talk and screening by documentary film maker Sławomir Grünberg
1) Yiddish scholar Anna Rozenfeld will speak on:
"Yiddish Programs on the Polish Radio After World War II (1945-58)"
Lecture with presentation of selected archival recordings.
The first time a Yiddish radio program was broadcast in Poland was
transmitted on a station out of Lublin, on January 6, 1945. These
Yiddish programs, created by a couple of Jewish actors Jonas Turkow and
his wife, Diana Blumenfeld, provided news about the fates of Poland's
Jews and played a central role in helping survivors find their
relatives.
In June 1945, Yiddish programs started to be broadcast from Warsaw and
they were prepared by The Central Committee of Polish Jews (CKŻP) at the
Department of Culture and Propaganda.
Artistic and literary as well as musical and vocal programs were also
introduced. These literary programs helped people get familiar with
Polish and Jewish culture, whereas musical programs presented them with
folk music, old and new Jewish songs. The programs included the
participation of well-known Yiddish writers, poets, literary critics,
celebrities and Jewish theater actors.
Although there are numerous publications and studies on Jewish life in
Poland after the war, the topic of radio broadcast in Yiddish by Polskie
Radio in the years 1945 to 1958 has never been widely studied. And it is
a very important aspect in the history of Jewish life in post-war
Poland.
The lecture is based on research in the archives in Poland, and later at
YIVO, in New York.

2) Documentary film maker Sławomir Grünberg will speak about his recent
work including the story behind his latest film, "Karski & The Lords of
Humanity," a feature-length partially animated documentary project about
a man who tried to prevent the Holocaust: Polish Underground courier Jan
Karski (featured in "Shoah"). A special screening will follow the
discussion.
"Your film hits right between the eyes, also because of the perfect
technique." _Gazeta Wyborcza_
"In front of the camera, Jan Karski looks like an actor who saves the
world. He was able to say: 'I wanted to save millions, but I could not
save anybody at all.' He is a victorious, tragic hero in the splendid
documentary film by Slawomir Grunberg: 'Karski & The Lords of the
Humanity'.... The main value of the film is the disclosure of a gap
between reality and what we want or can assimilate from this reality.
'Karski & The Lords of Humanity' is a movie about a hero. But Karski's
heroism connects him with tragedy and hopelessness." _Gazeta Wyborcza_
"In Slawomir Grunberg's movie the archival footage, interviews and the
modern animation build Karski's portrait as an unshaken moral
aristocrat. "Karski & The Lords of Humanity" is a moving story about war
cruelty, which leaves its mark." Bartosz Staszczyszyn
"I am shaken and deeply moved by this film. ... I am very happy because
this film will encourage young people." Wiesława Kozielewska-Trzaska,
Jan Karski's niece
