Dear Students,
I am calling upon you to help us keep the training of new Jewish educators
vigorous. Brandeis University is seeking candidates for its DeLeT MAT
(Master of Arts in Teaching) which prepares teachers for teaching in Jewish
day schools. Perhaps you are not interested yourself in this program, but
have a friend with whom you would like to share this information.
Currently, there are three tracks to Delet:
§ For people interested in teaching Hebrew in grades 1- 8
§ For prospective secondary teachers of Hebrew Bible
§ For people interested in teaching elementary general (secular) studies
with an emphasis focused on integrating Jewish values and content into the
curriculum.
The DeLeT program allows students to receive an MAT at a highly subsidized
fee and in a short amount of time (2 summers of course work which bookend a
practicum year of student teaching and study).
*Through a partnership with Lander Grinspoon Academy in Northampton (a
local K-6 Jewish day school) DeLeT is seeking applications from students
for its MAT program who would be offered a local placement during the
2013-14 academic year in Northampton! If accepted, you would join the
faculty of LGA in Northampton as a student teacher as part of your DeLeT
studies, and finish your year with an MAT degree!*
A second initiative combines the DeLeT program with a fully funded year of
study at Pardes in Jerusalem. In this new partnership, students first
spend a year in Jerusalem studying Hebrew language and classical Jewish
texts, within the vibrant, diverse Pardes community. They then come to
Brandeis for the Delet MAT program, which focuses on helping them learn to
teach. This option could work for people interested in any one of the
tracks listed above.
Program Highlights
Professional and Jewish studies closely integrated with a yearlong
internship under the guidance of a trained mentor teacher
Limited cohort size to encourage close collaboration within the student
group and between students and faculty.
Assistance with job placement, and support during the first two years of
teaching plus membership in a growing alumni network
The DeLeT Program has told me that they are particularly eager to receive
applications from seniors in the Five Colleges, particular from individuals
who might wish to spend next year earning their MAT and doing their student
teaching at LGA in Northampton.
