Hi everyone,
I want to encourage you to consider taking (and tell your friends about!) a new
spring course taught by Smith professor Justin Cammy. Here is the description
and meeting information:
HACU 246: Israel: Texts and Contexts: Through the prism of novels, short
stories, poetry and some film, explores the relationship between Zionism as the
political movement that established the State of Israel and Zionism as the
aesthetic and cultural revolution that sought to reinvent the modern Jew.
Focuses on tensions between utopian vision and political reality; sacred and
secular space; exile and homecoming; Arab and Jew; and Israel's self-definition
as a democratic and Jewish state. Readings from classic and contemporary works
by Hebrew writers, with additional glances at European, American, and
Palestinian sources. Intended for serious students interested in Middle East
studies, Jewish studies, and/or the relationship between literature and
politics. Satisfies Distribution (CHL)
Meets W 1-3:50 in ASH 112
Best,
Rachel
