[Jewish] Invitation to Yiddish Translation Conference

Aaron Lansky, Yiddish Book Center conference at bikher.org
Tue Jul 26 11:55:06 EDT 2011

Tayere khaverim,

I'm writing to invite you to "Translating Yiddish Literature: Mobilizing a New Generation," a two-day working conference on Yiddish translation, to take place November 12 - 13th, 2011 at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts.

The conference comes at a moment of great urgency and promise. Less than two percent of Yiddish literature has been translated to date, and despite recent efforts (such as our New Yiddish Library), at the current rate it will be another 25,000 years before all Yiddish titles are accessible to English readers.

As a result, the Yiddish Book Center and the Fund for Translation of Jewish Literature have decided to bring together everyone in the field - professional and aspiring translators, scholars, publishers, students, and others - to explore a range of practical issues:

* What works should be translated?
* How can we make use of new media and online publishing?
* How do we train a new generation of translators, and what resources do they need to succeed?

The conference will begin with dinner and an opening session after Shabbos on Saturday evening, and conclude by 3 PM Sunday. A complete schedule and list of panelists is available here: http://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/translationconference

The subsidized fee for the conference, including kosher dinner and lunch at the Center, is $25 per person. We've arranged for discounts at local hotels. (You'll need to make your own reservations.) Please direct inquiries to our director of educational programs, Amy Leos-Urbel, at conference at bikher.org. Limited travel subsidies are available; apply by September 20: http://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/conferencesubsidy

The deadline for registration is October 10. Space is limited, so we suggest you register early: http://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/translationconference

We hope you'll be able to join us and take part in this important conversation.

Sincerely,
Aaron Lansky, President
Yiddish Book Center
