ANTI-OPPRESSION SEDER, THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 27th @ 4 PM!
Passover commemorates the Exodus from Egypt and the liberation of the
Israelites
from slavery. The term "passover" refers to God's sparing of the Hebrew
firstborn as he saw the blood of the Passover lamb on the doorposts
of their
houses on the night of the Tenth Plague. The Festival of the
Unleavened Bread
refers to the week-long period when leaven has been left out, and
unleavened
bread or matzah ("flatbread"), the holiday's primary symbol, is eaten
to recall
the rapid departure of the Israelies from Egypt.
In a greater context, what relevancy does the Hebraic story of Moses
have to
communities fighting oppression? What meanings can be applied to
those who are
oppressed? Those who are oppressors? And all those who are struggling to
actively fight forms of oppression?
On a personal level, what does this tell us about modern slavery?
Colonized
minds? Homophobia? Clinicalism? Binaries? Liberalism? Blindness? Etc.
Through the tropes of this Jewish holiday, these are some of the guiding
questions that will shape the discussions at this anti-Oppression
seder. This
seder hopes to create an intersectional space for real dialogue about
where we
stand as members of various communities, where we are going,
emotions, ideas,
and social change. But more importantly, about ourselves.
