_The Environment As a Bridge to Peace in the Arab-Israeli Conflict_
Rabbi Michael Cohen, Director of Special Projects The Arava Institute
for Environmental Studies will present a case study of the important
work the institute is doing in promoting peace and caring for the
environment with its students from Israel, Palestine and Jordan.
The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (AIES) is a regional
center for environmental leadership.
By encouraging environmental cooperation between peoples, the Arava
Institute is working towards peace and sustainable development on a
regional and global scale. The Institute is situated on Kibbutz Ketura
in Israel's Southern Arava Valley - a desert in the Syrio-African rift
near the Jordanian and Egyptian borders and the Gulf of Aqaba/Eilat. The
Institute is home to academic programs, research and public involvement.

"The more deeply immersed I became in the thinking of the prophets, the
more powerfully it became clear to me what the lives of the prophets
sought to convey: that morally speaking there is no limit to the concern
one must feel for the suffering of human beings. It also became clear to
me that in regard to cruelties committed in the name of a free society,
some are guilty, all are responsible."
-Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
