DESCRIPTION: The Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law is a Los
Angeles non-profit organization that focuses its work on the civil and
human rights of insular minorities including immigrants, refugees,
children, and indigenous peoples. The Center initiates and conducts
major class action litigation, often involving constitutional law
issues. The program also operates community-based and international
human rights projects.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: B.A./B.S. required. Excellent typing skills
(minimum of 50 wpm); proficient computer use (Macintosh preferred),
including word processing (Microsoft Word and Excel); must be highly
motivated, dynamic, able to handle several tasks at once; desire to work
in the public interest and provide direct services. Spanish fluency
required. Legal experience preferred.
SALARY: $25,000 plus medical and dental insurance, and paid sick leave
and vacation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Update and maintain the Program’s contacts database.
2. Update and maintain paper and digital files and indexes (e.g. class
action lawsuits and other open cases).
3. Process and archive incoming mail.
4. Submit office supplies orders.
5. Respond to telephonic and written inquiries regarding class action
settlements.
6. Assist walk-ins and others requesting information or referrals.
7. Process appeals filed by class members in class action cases. Update
and maintain the appeals paper and computer-based files, and forward
appeals, briefs, and additional evidence to the corresponding Special
Master.
8. Research help to update the program's web sites relating to
legalization, LIFE Act, unaccompanied minors, trafficking victims, etc.
Administrative Assistant reports directly to General Counsel and Executive
Director.
