size="-1">Since the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights in 1948, human rights have become a
subject of social, political and philosophical controversies.
Considered a quintessential expression of the modern Western cultural
ethos, the Declaration has been increasingly associated outside the
West with notions of western cultural imperialism. Since the
year 2000, heated debates over the vision of human rights have been
taking place in Russia. Initiated by the Russian Orthodox Church in an
attempt to engage the human rights discourse on behalf of other
cultural traditions, these debates focus on the definition of the
human person and the social implications of the notion of "moral
autonomy." On Thursday, April 12, Professor Alexander Agadjanian,
Center for the Study of Religion, Russian State University of
Humanities, will speak about the philosophical and political
implications of these current debates.
