Dual Degrees: What Students Should Know

When considering law school, many prospective students have questions
about dual-degree programs.

Here are five things those students should know:

 1. *Don’t rush it.* Definitely check out a law school’s dual-degree
programs to see if they match up with your interests. That said, it
may be better to wait until you are on campus to apply to a second
program — it’s stressful enough getting your JD applications in, and
many dual-degree programs don’t start until the second year of law
school. Also, once you plunge into the first-year curriculum, you
may find your career interests shifting.
 2. *Talk to students in the program. *Get into the nuts and bolts and
find out if you think the curriculum is in line with your interests.
 3. *Do the math. *Dual-degree programs can add another year of school
beyond the JD. Can you afford to pay the tuition or absorb the debt?
Is there scholarship money available? Weigh the value of the debt
and degree against joining the work force earlier.
 4. *Explore the alternatives. *Research law schools that offer other
types of interdisciplinary study opportunities. You may be able to
obtain similar expertise by cross-registering for electives in other
    schools within the university.
 5. *Do some career research. *Speak to professionals in the type of
legal career you hope to pursue. Find out if they have a special
degree in the field — does it help to have that second degree? Does
it matter if you don’t have that second degree? How will the degree
help position you to obtain a job?

Now, don’t get us wrong: we are proud of our dual-degree programs
<http://northeastern.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50300d5ab8e534fcc3ad087a5&id=1c4377b369&e=8c41de2a83>
here at Northeastern. And our students who enroll in the dual-degree
programs are uniformly happy with their decisions and often find their
job prospects are improved by having that second degree. So, a
dual-degree may be just the perfect choice … after you have gone through
the above steps and know it’s the right path for you.

Northeastern Named a Changemaker Campus by Ashoka U

As part of a campus-wide team, the law school’s NuLawLab
<http://northeastern.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50300d5ab8e534fcc3ad087a5&id=820fff30a4&e=8c41de2a83>
has secured the coveted Changemaker Campus designation by Ashoka U
<http://northeastern.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50300d5ab8e534fcc3ad087a5&id=58c965e19b&e=8c41de2a83>,
the world’s largest global convening for social entrepreneurship
education. Northeastern joins a network of just 35 campuses worldwide
that are recognized for embedded social innovation as a core value and
supportive environments for changemaking across the entire institution.
Northeastern is the first Changemaker Campus to have fully incorporated
social innovation into its law school.

research interests and pro bono activities revolve primarily around the
topic of wrongful convictions. His book, /Prosecution Complex: America’s
Race to Convict and Its Impact on the Innocent/ (New York University
Press, 2012), explores how prosecutors may occasionally and
inadvertently contribute to wrongful convictions because of cognitive
biases and an overly-deferential regime of legal and ethical rules.

Professor Medwed is an official Legal Analyst for WGBH News, Boston’s
local NPR and PBS affiliate. He is frequently asked to weigh in on
high-profile criminal cases including those of Adnan Syed
