>
> On Monday, Sept. 22 at 4:30pm in Room 100 Clark House at Amherst College, Julie Peters, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University will present a paper entitled “ Theatres of Punishment: Dramaturgy, Spectacle, and Spectatorship from the Guillotine to Abu Ghraib.” This is the first presentation in a series of seminars that will take place this year on the theme “Law as Performance.”
>
> Professor Peters teaches and writes on theatre, film, and other media, as well as on legal history and culture. Her publications include Theatre of the Book: Print, Text, and Performance in Europe 1480-1880, (Oxford, 2000) and Women’s Rights, Human Rights: International Feminist Perspectives, (Routledge 1995). Currently, she is working on a historical study of legal performance and law’s fraught relationship with its own theatricality.
