Interested in International Human Rights Work? Check out these
opportunities. It's a 3 to 6 month commitment to would work well for a
summer or a semester abroad in the Netherlands.
Dear Colleagues,
The Communications Section of the International Criminal Tribunal for
the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is currently looking for interns who would
be interested in joining our team for a period of three to six months.
The ICTY is a United Nations' court of law dealing with war crimes that
took place during the conflicts in the Balkans in the 1990's, since its
establishment in 1993 it has irreversibly changed the landscape of
international humanitarian law and provided victims an opportunity to
voice the horrors they witnessed and experienced.
The Tribunal is composed of three pillars, namely the Chambers, the
Registry and the Office of the Prosecutor. The Communications Section,
as part of the Registry, is responsible for all public information
related issues, and very significantly, for "reaching out" to the region
of the former Yugoslavia, with various projects such as university
lectures, conferences, production of documentaries, etc.
Our interns get the opportunity to work on press releases, assist in
drafting media reports, contribute to the development of content for the
website, assist in organizing and handling visits at the ICTY and other
related activities.. Please find below additional information about our
Section and the work we do.
We would greatly appreciate if you could share this information with
your students and colleagues. This will both help us identify the best
interns for our department, and provide an opportunity to your students
to get a firsthand experience of working in a UN organization.
The students interested in doing an internship at the Tribunal can apply
on-line through the link below
Thanking you for your kind consideration and with best regards,
The ICTY Communications Section.

List of activities in the Communications Section:
*_Communications Service_*
The Communications Service has two main components:
· Public Information
· Outreach
*Public Information *
The *Media Office* communicates information about the Tribunal's work
and achievements through its daily contacts with the media. It responds
to media enquiries, issues press releases, facilitates interviews with
the Tribunal's spokespersons, assists research on Tribunal related
issues, provides audiovisual material for media use, and assists
journalists in their work on in-depth projects about the Tribunal. The
office also holds a weekly press briefing, which provides the media with
updates and an opportunity to put "on the record" questions to ICTY
spokespersons. The Tribunal's social media platforms are also handled by
the Media Office providing up to the minute information on judicial and
outreach activities.
The *Web Unit* operates and maintains the ICTY website in English,
French and Bosnian/ Croatian/Serbian - the site includes public
information materials, legal documents, and special features prepared by
the Communications Service in coordination with relevant sections
throughout the Tribunal. The Web Unit also operates and maintains the
MICT website in English, French, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and Kinyarwanda.
The *Library/Publications/Tribunet* unit variously: provides *library*
research services to ICTY staff and interns, and maintains an up-to-date
collection of books, loose-leaf and journals on international criminal
law, human rights, international humanitarian law, etc.; produces
*publications* including brochures, leaflets, postcards, posters and
other public relations material, produces and disseminates a bimonthly
newsletter aimed at the diplomatic community, assists in the
proofreading/editing of all English language material produced by the
Communications service; and manages the *Tribunet*, the institution's
intranet, which includes an internal news service for staff.
A legal background is not required; applicants with a background in
journalism, media, public relations, web development, social media or
the humanities would be preferred for the Public Information section.
*Outreach (preferred period of three to six months)*
The Outreach Programme is dedicated to communicating the work and
relevance of the Tribunal to the peoples of the former Yugoslavia.
Operating primarily in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, the programme strives
to make the Tribunal's activities transparent, accessible and
intelligible to the communities of the region, with a focus on raising
awareness of the ICTY's work and promoting its legacy. Through its
regional offices - in Sarajevo and Belgrade - the Outreach Programme
actively engages local legal communities, NGOs, media, victims'
associations and other key groups. Outreach is also responsible for the
majority of public visits to the Tribunal, which, in the last year, saw
Outreach staff welcoming more than 9,000 guests.
A legal background is not required; applicants with humanities/social
sciences backgrounds would certainly be considered.
