Dear Carin,
I’m writing to tell you about an exciting new summer program that Duke
Law School is launching this July in Washington, DC, which may be of
interest to your current undergraduates and recent graduates considering
law school and/or careers in the public sector.
The DC Summer Institute on Law and Policy is designed for those seeking
to better understand how the law shapes policy and regulation in the
United States. Over two, two-week sessions (July 8-18 and July 22-August
2), premier public law faculty from Duke Law School will offer short
courses on topics of broad interest, such as constitutional and
regulatory law, the legislative process, and the legal framework in
which public policy is formulated and implemented. The program is open
to college juniors and seniors, graduate and professional students,
lawyers, legislative aides, federal agency employees, nongovernmental
analysts, journalists, and others.
Two courses will focus on constitutional law – in the first session, the
structure (with a case study on the Affordable Care Act), and in the
second, specific rights (with a case study on equal protection and
race/gender/sexual orientation). Other courses will examine legal
frameworks in specific areas such as environmental law and fracking,
financial regulation and banking, hot topics in national security,
statutory interpretation and legislation, criminal law and wrongful
convictions, health care law and policy, and federal policymaking.
Classes will take place at the Duke in Washington offices each evening,
at the close of the workday, to fit with the schedules of individuals
already working in Washington, either for the summer or full-time.
Participants may enroll in a single course, or up to four courses total
(two per session).
The website and application for the Institute are located at

apply by April 15, 2013. If you have any questions or would like
additional information, please contact Amanda Lacoff
