*Environmental Law & Policy Scholarship 2013*



President Jonathan Lash has opened the door for Hampshire students to be
considered for a full scholarship to a* Master's or Juris Doctor* program
at *Vermont Law School*, a terrific opportunity! VLS is consistently ranked
as having *the country's top environmental law program*.  Deadline to apply
at Hampshire is 12/1/2012!





Each year, Hampshire can recommend 1 student for one of the following
opportunities:

·      *3-year Full Scholarship* for Juris Doctor (JD) program *or* Joint
JD/Masters of Environmental Law and Policy (MELP) program

·      *1-year Full Scholarship* for Masters of Environmental Law and
Policy (MELP) program

*Eligibility:*



This scholarship is available for a Hampshire student or recent alum (up to
5 years out) with a demonstrated commitment to environmental change and a
desire to pursue a degree from VLS.



*Options:*



*A.  3-Year JD or Joint JD/ Masters in Environmental Law and Policy Program
Scholarship:*



   •  3-year full-tuition scholarship to VLS for either program, starting
in 2013

   •  Inclusion in the Dean’s Scholar program

   •  Inclusion in the international program experience with waived
administrative fees



*•  Candidate Requirements:*

-  Demonstrated commitment to environmental issues and service through
campus and/or community activities

-  Excellent writing and critical thinking abilities

-  LSAT score of 160 or better

-  Commitment to attend VLS in Fall 2013, if awarded the Hampshire/VLS
Scholarship; no deferrals are possible.



*B. 1-Year Masters in Environmental Law and Policy (MELP) Program
Scholarship:*



• One year (2013-2014) full-tuition scholarship for MELP-only degree
program at Vermont Law School

•  Inclusion in the Dean’s Scholar program

- Demonstrated commitment to environmental issues and service through
campus and/or community activities

-  Excellent writing and critical thinking abilities

-  Commitment to attend VLS for the one-year program, starting in Summer or
Fall 2013, if awarded the Hampshire/VLS Scholarship; no deferrals are
possible

Applications are due to the Hampshire-VLS Scholarship Committee by *December
1, 2012*.  You will see that our application closely follows the VLS
application.  We have asked one additional essay question, but all other
written documents are the same as what is needed by VLS.

Please respond to each of the essay topics separately.  Applicants are
encouraged to be as forthright and open as possible, and should feel free
to discuss unusual circumstances or situations of adversity that may have
influenced their current values. Be aware that both the quality of your
writing and the thoughtfulness of your answers will be evaluated.

*1. *Describe the goals that are motivating you to pursue (a law degree, or
a master’s degree in environmental law and policy). How do you think the
skills and experience you will gain at Vermont Law School will help you
achieve those goals?

*2. *How have you tried to effect change in relation to an issue of
personal, local, or national significance?

*3. *Optional Question: Give a realistic appraisal of your academic work
since graduation from high school. Please note any inconsistencies in your
record and the reasons for them.

Wait to submit your application to VLS until after you hear if you are
being recommended for the VLS Scholarship.  The Committee wants to support
you in putting your best application forward and will have valuable
feedback for you to consider before submitting.  DO NOT submit your
application before you hear from the Hampshire Committee.  We expect to
make decisions by early January at latest.


The deadline for the Hampshire nominee to submit their application to the
program of their choice at VLS is February 1.
