Description

The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law is a
non-partisan public policy and law institute that focuses on the
fundamental issues of democracy and justice. Our work ranges from voting
rights to campaign finance reform, from racial justice in criminal law
to Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism. A singular
institution – part think tank, part public interest law firm, part
advocacy group – the Brennan Center combines scholarship, legislative
and legal advocacy, and communications to win meaningful, measurable
change in the public sector.

We seek a full-time Research Associate for our Justice Program. The
Justice Program works to repair the “justice gap” – the continuing
inability of our courts and government agencies to secure the rule of
law and prevent wrongful harms to low income people and communities of
color. This position is based in our New York office.

Research Associates in the Justice Program work collaboratively to carry
out a range of substantive and administrative activities in order to
further the work of the Program.

Responsibilities include:

     Conducting legal and non-legal research;
     Contributing to Brennan Center reports, fact sheets, and op-eds;
     Organizing and collaborating with a wide range of constituencies to
support expanded access to civil legal aid and indigent defense;
reforming foreclosure and criminal justice policies as well as work in
additional issue areas under the Justice Program’s expanded purview;
     Providing litigation assistance and document management as needed;
     Updating the Justice Program web pages;
     Providing communications support for Justice Program activities; and
     Performing a wide range of administrative tasks, including:
entering data, preparing foundation reports, handling photocopying,
correspondence, filing, and scheduling.

The ideal candidate has:

     Excellent writing skills;
     Strong analytic and research skills;
     Humor, initiative, and openness to evolving responsibilities and
work environments;
     Experience in public policy analysis, journalism, law, and/or
organizing;
     Creativity in ferreting out information;
     Strong attention to detail;
     Confidence in reaching out to advocates and activists around the
nation;
     Inclination to collaborate with others;
     Interest in using law and public policy to fight poverty and
protect the rights of low-income communities;
     Enthusiasm for administrative tasks; and
     A bachelor’s degree (this is an entry-level position; individuals
with JDs or PhDs will not be considered).

The Brennan Center, an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer,
is strongly committed to diversity and welcomes applicants of all races,
ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations, including people who have
been previously incarcerated.
