Greetings,
I am writing with information about a program that might be of
interest to your students. This summer, Commonwealth Honors College
at UMass Amherst will be offering a preparatory workshop for students
who are on their way to law school in the fall.
Law School Preparation (LSP) is an intensive two-week workshop for
students who want a competitive edge when they enter law school. LSP
will provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel
in law school. It is a lecture-based workshop that includes a
substantive introduction to first year law school courses (property,
contracts, torts, criminal law, civil procedure, and constitution
law). LSP also includes skills that will allow students to hit the
ground running from the first day of law school. These skills include
briefing cases, taking law school examinations, understanding the U.S.
legal system, conducting legal research, and understanding Bluebook
legal citations.
LSP is taught by Kathleen A. Brown-Perez, Assistant Professor in
Commonwealth Honors College at the University of Massachusetts
Amherst. Brown-Perez has her MBA (’93) and JD (’96) from the
University of Iowa and is licensed to practice in Massachusetts and
Arizona. As a law student, she was Senior Associate Editor of the Iowa
Law Review. She participated in Moot Court competitions and
represented habeas corpus clients in the Iowa Legal Clinic. She served
as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Nancy Baumgartner, Iowa District
Court. She was also the 1995-1996 recipient of the Daum Law
Scholarship, awarded for outstanding performance at the Iowa Law
School, and was recognized in Who’s Who: American Law Students
(1994-96).
Brown-Perez has taught law classes at UMass Amherst, including
Criminal Law and Federal Indian Law, since 2006. She previously taught
legal research and writing in the Legal Studies Department. Prior to
that, she was an adjunct assistant professor of law at Hampshire
College, where she taught Federal Indian Law and Discrimination Law.
Brown-Perez has practiced corporate law in Phoenix and Boston,
specializing in tax exempt and non-profit corporations.
In addition to her teaching, Brown-Perez is an attorney-editor for
West Publishing. She currently writes Westlaw’s monthly newsletter on
union contract law. She is also the author of West’s Employment
Practices Guidebook and has forthcoming books on federal
acknowledgment (UNC Press, 2011) and Indian law and tribal politics
(SUNY Press, 2011).
Class will meet from 10:00 to 3:00 (including an hour for lunch), June
6 through June 17 (Monday through Friday).
Law School Preparation Fees are as follows:
Early Bird Tuition (by March 31st) - $1000.00
Regular Tuition (after March 31st) - $1100.00
Optional Dormitory Housing (nights of June 6-16, 2011) - $439.00
Optional Weekday Meal Plan (Monday-Friday, weeks of June 6& 13) - $206.00
This email is addressed only to junior and senior honors students so
that you'll have a chance to register before LSP is full. Eventually
the workshop will be advertised regionally. Enrollment is limited and
we are already processing registrations.
