Description
The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Connecticut (ACLUF-CT)
seeks a full-time Legal Assistant. The Legal Assistant will report to
the Legal Director and Staff Attorney and will also provide support to
the national ACLU Staff Attorney. The Legal Assistant will be part of a
dynamic team of staff and volunteers who work to promote and defend the
principles of freedom, justice and equality in Connecticut.
Responsibilities:
-Maintain legal case files (opening, maintenance and archiving)
-Assist Legal Director and Staff Attorney in drafting, formatting,
proofing and filing legal documents in federal and state courts
-Perform internet and other factual research for potential cases
-Handle correspondence for the Legal Program
-Manage intake system, including tracking and responding to inquiries
for legal assistance
-Provide support for the national ACLU Staff Attorney
Answer telephone calls relating to the Legal Department
Assist with recruiting, supervision, scheduling and evaluation of
legal interns
-Perform other duties as assigned by the Legal Director and Staff Attorney
Qualifications:
The qualifications for this position are not fixed. While a related
undergraduate degree is desired, appropriate prior legal experience can
also provide the qualification for the position. The candidate selected
must possess:
• Strong computer skills in Windows environment, including Word, MS
Excel, Adobe Acrobat, PowerPoint and Outlook
• Excellent organization skills and ability to promote an efficient,
streamlined office environment
• Excellent telephone manner and strong interpersonal skills, both
written and verbal
• High level of motivation with superb attention to detail and the
ability to handle multiple priorities under strict deadlines
• Firm commitment to the mission of the ACLU
• Spanish speaking ability is a plus.
