Calling the Ghosts (1996)
The second installment of the Human Rights Film Series, sponsored by
SS106T genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, the Law Program and the
Dean of Multicultural Education.
Filmmakers: M. Jacobsen and K. Jelincic, 1996. Women survivors of
Omarska Detention Camp during the Bosnian war of the early 1990s
describe the camp and the widespread sexual violence against women in
the region. After their release, the two women, one a lawyer, the
other a former judge, speak about their experiences of systematic
humiliation, rape and torture and seek to aid other women who were
also brutalized. They lobby to have rape declared a war crime by the
UN Tribunal at the Hague and demand the arrest of the camp
commandant Zelko Mejankic. He was finally taken into custory by the
International Criminal Tribunal at the Hague in 2003 and is currently
detained there awaiting trial.
