title and description of which have been revised since the printing
of the final course guide for Spring 2002. We especially welcome five
college interchange students.

SS245 Social Identities and Legal Rights:
Contemporary Critical Race, Feminist and Queer Legal Theories
Spring 2002
Flavio Risech, Associate Professor of Law and Ethnic Studies
Marlene Fried, Professor of Philosophy

Course Description: Contemporary critical race, feminist and queer
legal theorists argue that race, gender and sexual orientation should
influence legal analysis of the meaning of constitutional guarantees
of liberty and equality. The heart of the course will be an
examination of the ways these theorists articulate new ways to expand
the rights of all persons, despite social differences. Through close
readings of landmark court decisions on discrimination cases in
conjunction with theoretical articles, and analyses of contemporary
issues including sexual harassment, racial discrimination and
gay/lesbian family rights, we will assess the potential and the
limits of the law for defining and realizing equal rights for diverse
groups in U.S. society.

Course meets Tuesday and Thursday, 2:00 to 3:20 p.m. in Frankilin
Patterrson Hall, Room 108, Hampshire College. First class meeting is
January 31.
