GOING ABROAD SPRING 2009?</b><br>

If you haven't started looking into your options and deciding which
program(s) or opportunities to apply to, the time to do so is NOW! Why
so "early"?<br>
<br>
- You'll need time to do research and planning to figure out what
option is going to best suit your academic needs & financial
situation<br>
<br>
- Many spring program deadlines are early or mid fall semester<br>
<br>
- Non-program-based opportunities may take a while to coordinate<br>
<br>
- You need to discuss things with your faculty committee, because they
need to approve what you're doing academically<br>
<br>
- You may need to look for sources for scholarships & funding<br>

basics on how study abroad works at Hampshire, every Thursday 4-4:30pm

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GOING ABROAD</b><br>
Here are some opportunities GEO staff have recently heard about.
Unless specified, they are NOT Hampshire-sponsored programs, and so
Hampshire does not offer financial aid for participating.<br>

<b>International Summer School in Berlin, Germany; Sussex, England</b><br>
Both the Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Sussex offer
summer courses on a wide variety of material, taught alongside students
from many different countries. It's not too late to register!<br>
Application Deadline: still accepting applications subject to course
availability<br>

Antioch Education Abroad</b><br>
>From Antioch's website: "We’re not tourists. At Antioch Education
Abroad (AEA), our acclaimed study abroad programs are designed to
promote challenging opportunities to engage in deeply rewarding, often
life-changing experiences in both the sciences and humanities. AEA
programs further a historic tradition of combining rigorous academics
with independent field research, apprenticeships, and internships.
Students on AEA programs have access to an integrated, in-depth study
abroad experience connecting them to the world. Whether living in a
Buddhist monastery in India or examining diverse ecosystems in the
Brazilian rainforest, AEA students come into direct contact with
scholars, community leaders, and professionals in their fields. Our
programs are hands-on, too. From personalized internships with master
artists in Mali to gender discussions in European parliament, we insist
students commit to cross-cultural education resulting in active global
participation." A few Hampshire students have already participated in
Antioch's programs.<br>
Application Deadline: mid-October for Spring 2009; mid to late March
for Fall 2009 (most Antioch programs only run in the fall)<br>

Living Routes: Study Abroad in Ecovillages</b><br>
Living Routes offers a wide variety of study abroad programs focused on
sustainability. A few examples include: Leadership for Social Change
in Mexico, Sustainable Community Development in Senegal, Human
Challenge of Sustainability in Scotland, Peace, Justice & the
Environment in Israel, and more! These academic programs incorporate
coursework with individualized projects and hands-on experience.
Programs are typically offered in EITHER the fall OR spring semesters,
or in January-Term or Summer, so one should plan ahead to study at a
specific site!<br>

<b>FELLOWSHIPS & SCHOLARSHIPS</b><br>
<br>
Merit Scholarships for Freie Universität Berlin Int'l Summer University<br>
(July 19th - August 16th) If you're interested in studying alongside
students from a wide variety of countries in Berlin, Germany,
recently-announced merit-based scholarships of 800 Euro make it more
affordable! Courses, all taught in English, encompass a variety of
academic fields, such as artchitecture, social sciences and cultural
studies, history, photography, urban studies, German language, law and
politics & film & art studies.<br>
Application Deadline: May 15 for scholarship, later for course
registration (though tuition fees raise the later you register)<br>
