IAU France offers a compelling combination - the assurance
of a rigorous
American form of education thoroughly integrated into all that is
exceptional and powerful in French culture. In smaller cities like Aix
and Avignon, where Americans are not quite so common a sight, it is
easier to meet residents and other students spontaneously, and to speak
French.
Abroad offers field-based learning in both semester and summer
programs, in which students integrate classroom study with field and
research experience, creating synergies that enrich both their time
abroad and their future studies. An academic director with experience
in a relevant area of study and extensive knowledge of the host country
supervises in-country coursework while facilitating student access to
local resources, facilities, and experts. Each small group of students
also benefits from the efforts of talented language instructors,
homestay coordinators, and other local staff. In addition to formally
structured coursework on our semester programs, students undertake a
month-long Independent Study Project on SIT Study Abroad semester
programs. Building on field study techniques acquired earlier in the
semester, and working together with a local advisor, students have the
opportunity to conduct research using primary sources on a topic that
they find particularly interesting.
