Summer Study Plus Internships or Volunteer Work</b><br>
Many students are looking for options beyond taking classes in English
in another country. In response to this, many quality study abroad
programs offer a framework that combines coursework with internships or
volunteer work in a related field, both experiences complementing the
other.<br>

How do you find these opportunities? Try GEO's resource library,
organized by country or region. You can also search online; we
recommend iiepassport.org, which has an advanced search option for
narrowing your search to short term/summer programs. Need help?
Contact GEO to set up a meeting for advice and guidance in your
search. You should also talk with your faculty committee and/or other
faculty related to your academic area of interest who might know of
opportunities in their field.<br>

Tip: Pay attention to the way programs talk about internship or
volunteer work opportunities. Is it an option that they briefly
mention, or an integral part of the program? Are they vague about what
opportunities are available, or do they list specific fields or
opportunities that previous students have taken part in? This, along
with contacting an organization or program, can help you narrow down
your search.<br>

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GOING ABROAD<br>
<br>
Transatlantic Renewable Energy Exchange (Internships in Germany)</b><br>
The Transatlantic Renewable Energy Exchange (TREE), a three-month
summer internship program in Germany focusing on renewable energy,
provides US students with an opportunity to complete paid professional
internships in Germany focusing on renewable energy. While US renewable
energy markets are starting to accelerate, Germany has aggressively
supported renewable energy since 1990 and is home to the world's
largest renewable energy markets. Germany leads the world in wind and
solar energy installations and is also the world's largest producer of
biodiesel. Given its considerable headstart with renewable energy,
Germany is an ideal training ground for US students interested in
pursuing clean energy careers. Internships are available in a variety
of professional fields. The program will begin in late May with a
week-long introductory seminar on the topic of renewable energy in
Germany and the EU at the University of Kassel in Germany, then
proceeds to a three-month internship placement. Students should have
completed two years of college-level German language, some practical
experience, and be US citizens.<br>

SEMESTER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GOING ABROAD<br>
<br>
FU-BEST in Berlin: German Language and European Studies</b><br>
Freie Universität Berlin invites applications for its undergraduate
FU-BEST (Berlin European Studies) program for Fall 2008 and beyond.
Based on the U.S. academic calendar, FU-BEST offers a strong intensive
German language program as well as an exciting menu of content courses
taught mostly in English but also in part in German. There is no
language prerequisite for participation in this program, but all
participants are obligated to enroll on-site in German language
training at their particular<br>
level. The content courses cover topics from a variety of disciplines,
ranging from political science, history, philosophy, and sociology to
comparative literature, architecture, film studies, and art history.<br>

<b>ChinaLink at Nanjing University: Environmental Studies and Chinese
Language</b><br>
This program offers the equivalent of a full year of Chinese language
instruction (150 hours) alongside three tightly integrated courses
focused on how the history, culture, economics and politics of
contemporary China influence the country’s emerging environmental
crisis and shape their quest for a path to sustainable development. The
Environmental Studies Program at Nanjing University is a unique
opportunity for students interested in global environmental issues.

UVA's Tibet University in Lhasa, Tibet Program</b><br>
This fall semester study abroad program is a unique opportunity
offering an innovative and immersive experience for students interested
in learning Tibetan culture, religion, and language by spending a
semester in Lhasa, the traditional center of Tibetan culture. It is the
only program offered in Tibet for American undergraduates which
combines formal classroom instruction in a modern University with
extensive ethnographic touring of areas surrounding Lhasa. The program
is based at Tibet University in Lhasa. UVA also offers a summer
intensive Tibet language program in Tibet.<br>

FELLOWSHIPS & SCHOLARSHIPS</b><br>

<b>Freeman-ASIA Awards for Summer '08</b><br>
Since the launch of the program in 2000, Freeman-ASIA has supported
over 3,000 U.S. undergraduates with their study abroad plans in East
and Southeast Asia. The summer award amount is $3,000. Applicants
must currently receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate through
FAFSA a verifiable need for financial assistance to study abroad in
Asia. Applicants must also plan to study in one of the following
countries and regions: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan,
Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan,
Thailand, Vietnam. For students applying to study abroad programs of 8
weeks or more with start date between May-July. (Freeman-ASIA also
offers awards for semester or year-length study; see their website for
details.)<br>
