NEXT WEEK'S GEO EVENTS<br>

Info Session for Kenchreai Summer Program: Archeology Dig in Greece<br>
Thursday, January 24 @ 4-5pm</b><br>
(rescheduled from the snow day on Monday, January 14)<br>
This is an exciting and competitive opportunity for one Hampshire
student to participate in an active archaeological excavation in
southern Greece this summer. The Kenchreai Excavations involve an
international team of experts in archeology, anthropology, art history,
and geology as well as a junior staff of undergraduate students from
schools across the country. Student participants will acquire basic
field techniques while working with world experts in the exploration of
ancient churches, temples shops, houses, and tombs at one of Greece’s
most spectacular seaside archaeological sties. Need-based financial aid
from Hampshire for program costs is available. (Another info session
for this program will happen on February 4.)<br>

<b>GEO'S TIP OF THE WEEK<br>
<br>
Summer Language Learning</b><br>
Summer is a great time to quickly advance language proficiency in
another language, whatever your level. There are many intensive
language programs or language institutes both in the U.S. and abroad.
Some possible program features include: <br>
<br>
-- covering the equivalent of two semester's worth of college-level
language courses<br>
-- providing an immersion experience in which you and other students
speak only the target language language classes<br>
-- academic courses (in English or the target language) <br>
-- options for community service learning or internship placement<br>
-- cultural excursions to nearby locations<br>
<br>
Hampshire offers a one- or two-month intensive Mandarin program at our
partner institution in Hefei, China, which features very small classes,
a variety of cultural activities, and a Hampshire faculty in residence
(Kay Johnson). Contact Kay or GEO for more information on this program.<br>

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GOING ABROAD<br>
<br>
Teach English in Chile with the National Volunteer Center</b><br>
(May 24-August 5 OR Jun 14-August 26) The Chilean Ministry of Education
in partnership with the United Nations Development PRogram-Chile is
sponsoring a summer volunteer English teaching program for a minimum of
10 weeks. Students concentrating in education/teaching and who have at
least a basic understanding of Spanish are encouraged to apply to
volunteer as English teaching assistants in public schools in Chile.
(Depending on the volunteer's level of experience, participants may
work in the same classroom as a Chilean EFL teacher of be given their
own class.) Participants live with a host family, receive a monthly
stipend of $150, and receive roundtrip-transportation from Santiago to
the volunteer placement site. (Airfare not provided.)<br>

<b>Spanish and Service Learning in Mexico or Uruguay</b><br>
ISEP (International Student Exchange Program) offers two Spanish
language learning programs that integrate a combination of language
courses and community service opportunities. Each are 4 weeks in
length, The Uruguay program in June and the Mexico program in July.
Please contact Hampshire's ISEP coordinator, Brianna Mercker in GEO,
for details about these programs. Applications and application fees
must be given to Brianna and NOT directly to ISEP.<br>

<b>SEMESTER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GOING ABROAD</b><br>

<b>Hampshire Semester Exchange Program Highlight<br>
ISEP: Full Immersion in a University Abroad</b><br>
ISEP (International Student Exchange Program) provides students with
semester or year-long opportunities to study in one of over 100
institutions in 38 countries around the world. Here's just a sampling
of what's possible through ISEP:<br>
-- Journalism or Marine Sciences in Chile<br>
-- Interactive Digital Media in Finland<br>
-- Agricultural Biophysiology or Fine Arts in France<br>
-- Art History or Drama/Theatre in Italy<br>
-- East Asian Studies in Korea<br>
-- Health Sciences in Mexico<br>
-- Biology or Sociology in Spain<br>
-- Music Composition in Sweden<br>
-- Thai Studies in Thailand <br>
For language learners, full immersion in a university abroad is a great
way to improve your language proficiency. If you're not advanced
enough to take courses in the host country's language, many ISEP member
universities offer courses in English in a wide variety of subjects,
along with language learning courses of all levels. If you're
interested in applying, set up an appointment with Hampshire's ISEP
coordinator, Brianna Mercker in GEO.<br>

<b>Volunteer in Tanzania with SAIDIA</b><br>
The SAIDIA Tanzania Organization allows students and individuals to
work with local communities and organizations in activities and
projects that enable sustainable positive change. SAIDIA's goal is to
create a Tanzania where its organization and its functions are no
longer necessary. Participants can choose to be involved for any time
range from two weeks to many months. They have many partner
organizations to work with that offer a variety of projects and areas
of work, including (among others) supporting orphan foster care, income
poverty reductions, HIV/AIDS education and home care, and reforestation.<br>

<b>IHP: "Nations and Identities" Program in Fall 2008</b><br>
This multi-country semester course, which travels to Canada, India, and
Mexico, examines how nation-states are being challenged by both global
forces and internal groups. These groups are seeking recognition of
their cultural and collective rights and demonstrating numerous ways to
make our fragile planet culturally plural, socially just, economically
feasible and ecologically sane. Through a comparative approach,
class-based lectures will be complemented with site visits, homestays
and interactive learning experiences with local activities, educators,
community members, public figures and leaders of governments and
community organizations.<br>
