- India
Application Deadline: March 16, 2012
The program in Varanasi, India was founded in 1961 and has a
strong reputation for academic quality and student satisfaction.
Traditionally known as an Academic Year program only, UW has
recently introduced a fall semester option for students. Both
durations feature intensive Hindi language study, program
courses, tutorials and for year long students, a fieldwork
project. Students can choose their tutorial interest and they
are
taught by a local expert. Tutorials can be in the performing or
visual arts, languages, or can focus on a specific study of
Indian literature. Students have studied martial arts, yoga,
clay pot making, Indian painting, stone carving, jewelry, dance,
or Indian instruments such as the sitar, tabla, violin, sarod or
voice. Language tutorials could be in Urdu, Sanskrit Tamil,
or Persian.
For the academic year fieldwork project, students will have the
opportunity to engage with local experts on a topic of their
choice. In the past, students have focused on politics, gender
roles, women's issues, environmental concerns, anthropological
studies, philosophy and religion,
and economic issues. Depending on the topic, the student is
matched up with a local expert or professor for guidance and
support while conducting interviews and community-based research
.
