The University of New Mexico has an ongoing program to study the role
of<br>
climate dynamics and ecosystem productivity on the dynamics of
hantavirus,<br>
a naturally- occurring zoonotic disease in wild rodents. To better<br>
understand these dynamics, small mammal populations are being
monitored at<br>
several sites in New Mexico, including but not limited to 1) the
Sevilleta<br>
National Wildlife Refuge, 2) Cibola National Forest near
Albuquerque,<br>
Gallup, and Magdelena, and 3) the Valles Caldera National Trust. The
summer<br>
intern will be responsible for obtaining blood samples and other data
from<br>
live rodents captured during these studies, collecting and
preparing<br>
voucher specimens to be deposited in the Museum of Southwestern
Biology,<br>
collecting samples of insects and plants from study sites, radio
tracking<br>
of small mammals, and data entry. The summer intern MUST be able to
make<br>
extensive field excursions (up to 5 consecutive days) several times
per<br>
month (up to 4 weeks per month). The associate must be enthusiastic,
highly<br>
motivated, able to work with limited supervision, and able to work as
a<br>
team member. This is an ideal position for someone seeking to gain<br>
experience in field biology in preparation for entering a field
based<br>
Master's degree program. The weekly stipend (approximately 40 hours
per<br>
week) is $360. Transportation to and from field sites, as well as<br>
accommodations at the field sites, are provided. To apply for the
