The Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE) has a<BR>
vacancy for a Research Intern position, available to start in April<BR>
2005, to assist in our efforts to understand the environmental consequences of<BR>
global land use and land cover change. The position will be ideal for a<BR>
post-master's or post-bachelor's level student seeking a full-time<BR>
position.<BR>
<BR>
The major focus of this position will be to map the geographic patterns<BR>
Of global agricultural land use and land cover. The work will involve the<BR>
integration of remotely-sensed land cover data with agricultural census<BR>
data from around the world, to develop global maps of croplands,<BR>
pastures, major crops, irrigation, fertilizer application rates, etc. The<BR>
employee will work with a research scientist and several undergraduate students to<BR>
design and maintain agricultural census databases; download, manipulate,<BR>
and analyze global remotely-sensed data, and improve upon the<BR>
statisticalmethods developed by SAGE to integrate remotely-sensed data with<BR>
agricultural census data.<BR>

We are searching for excellent candidates across the broad spectrum of<BR>
global environmental research disciplines. The successful candidate<BR>
will have excellent quantitative and analytical skills. Applicants with<BR>
degrees in Environmental Studies, Geography, Ecology, or Atmospheric<BR>
Science with an interest or experience in global environmental change<BR>
Are ideally suited for this position. Some prior experience working with<BR>
environmental data, including both spatial data (remote sensing or<BR>
otherwise) and socio-economic data would be beneficial. In addition,<BR>
the candidate would ideally have some previous experience in database<BR>
management, spatial analysis using GIS, as well as some experience with<BR>
statistical methods. Candidates should have good communication and<BR>
interpersonal skills.<BR>

This is a full time position, and the level of appointment will<BR>
Initially be for a year. The position may continue longer based on performance<BR>
And continued funding. The annual salary will be $30,000. The position<BR>

positions.<BR>
