One came in today for<font size="+1"><b> SNARL (Sierra Nevada Aquatic
Research Lab) for a non-native fish project</b></font>:</div>

<div>This position involves<u> backpacking into remote study
sites</u>, and extensive</div>
<div>collection and examination of zooplankton. <u> Lakes are
located in high<br>
elevation wilderness areas and the research requires backpacking trips
up to</u></div>
<div><u>a week in length</u>. Daily activities will include
intensive zooplankton<br>
sampling using a net and a float tube, carrying gear, and sharing
campsite</div>
<div>responsibilities. Housing is provided. There is also a
stipend of $750 (or $500/month) to</div>
<div>cover food and help with other expenses.</div>

<div>The field work is physically demanding and applicants<br>
should be able to hike 4-15 miles daily with a 40+ lb. backpack at
altitudes<br>
averaging 11,000 feet, work long hours, and spend several days at a
time<br>
camping in wilderness areas. Back-country camping experience and

<div>necessary. </div>

program. The Sevilleta is in NM and is just beautiful. It's an LTER
site. The description below has not details on projects but you
can email for mor information. Deadline is March 22 and you'll have to
get the application well ahead of time.</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>The Sevilleta LTER in Central New Mexico will
offer two (2) Research</b></font></div>
<div><font size="+1"><b>Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
opportunities during summer, 2004.</b></font><br>
<br>
In direct association with a Sevilleta LTER faculty mentor, each
REU<br>
student will develop and conduct independent summer research on
the<br>
Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. Students will participate in
all<br>
aspects of research, from planning projects and collecting field
data<br>
through computer data management and analysis, report preparation,
and<br>
oral presentations of results at a student symposium, and possibly
at<br>
the Ecological Society of America Meetings in Portland, Oregon.
During<br>
the course of the summer, students will gain training and experience
in<br>
plant and animal systematics, taxonomy, physiology, and ecological<br>
relationships that emphasize trophic structure and ecosystem
productivity.<br>

Lodging and laboratory space for REU students will be provided by
the<br>
UNM Sevilleta Field Station. In addition, candidates chosen will
receive<br>
a stipend for the duration of the 12-week summer program
(June-August).<br>

Applications will be accepted from students at any stage of their<br>
undergraduate program (freshman to senior) and any discipline, so
long</div>
<div>as the applicant is interested in conservation biology and
ecology.<br>
Students are not eligible if they have completed an undergraduate
degree<br>
by Summer 2004. We welcome applications from students at four year<br>
colleges, students that are the first member of their family to
attend<br>
college, non-traditional students, and students from traditionally<br>
underrepresented groups. Applications will be accepted until March
22,<br>
