the Urban Biosphere & Society: Partnership of Cities conference
being<br>
organized by UNESCO and Columbia University.<br>

Recent happenings:<br>
<br>
Hartford -- Mary Pelletier held a very successful meeting on Oct. 19
to<br>
initiate a community alliance to promote measures to upgrade the
North<br>
Branch of the Park River. About 25 people attended representing
various<br>
public and private stakeholders and interests that border that stream.
The<br>
Park River is surprisingly lacking in organized advocacy and Mary with
our<br>
support is working to fill that gap. She recently had a superb letter
on<br>
the topic published in the Hartford Courant.<br>
<br>
Pittsburgh -- Joy Abbott, our EC alum, has persuaded her employer,
the<br>
Allegheny Conference of Community Development, to let her begin
organizing<br>
an EC public symposium there. We met with Court Gould of
Sustainable<br>
Pittsburgh and Marijke Hecht of the Nine Mile Run
Watershed Association,<br>
both of whom supported the idea and may serve as co-oganizers. We also
hope<br>
that Joy can find time to prepare a case study of the Nine Mile Run,
a<br>
unique case of industrial brownfield remediation and stream
restoration in<br>
progress.<br>
<br>
Milwaukee -- Chris DeSousa has lined up a prominent civic organization
to<br>
host an EC public event some time next spring. Laurin Sievert is hard
at<br>
work on her case study of the Milwaukee River, as well as helping to
keep<br>
track of our various subcontracts and other activities.<br>
<br>
With the help of Juan Osorio, a grad student from Bogota with an<br>
architectural background, we are starting to develop contacts with
various<br>
EC related programs and organizations in Latin America. Carlo Ruiz,
another<br>
project assistant from Quito is conducting an urban watershed study in
his<br>
home region in Ecuador. A visiting scholar from Istanbul, Azime Tezer,
is<br>
helping to acquaint us with urban development issues in her home
city.<br>
<br>
We look forward to visits with my EC class here at UMass by Mary
Pelletier<br>
on Oct. 27, Mike Houck (currently at Harvard GSD as a Loeb Fellow) on
Nov.<br>
3, and Colleen Dunning-Murphy of the Yale/New Haven Urban
Resources<br>
Institute on Nov. 17. She may be joined by our old friend, Charlie
Lord<br>
from the Boston College Urban Resources Institute. These classes meet
on<br>
Monday afternoons in Morrill 126 from 2:30 - 5 in case anyone would
like to<br>
sit in.<br>
