From vpaulman at hampshire.edu Wed Dec 3 13:52:49 2003 From: vpaulman at hampshire.edu (Vanessa Paulman) Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2003 13:52:49 -0500 Subject: [ESSP] opportunities for students Message-ID: Students possibly interested in doing science internships for summer '04 research through the National Science Foundation (NSF) REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program: I am just starting to receive notices now for February/March deadlines. I will be posting these outside my door, but you can also find them on the NSF website at www.nsf.gov (follow education pathway). REUs are very prestigious, sizable grants with excellent people - for Division III and II. Many Hampshire students have gotten them. They are in all science disciplines. There will be over two thousand similar "House Party" screenings all across the country that evening coordinated by MoveOn.org, a grassroots network of over 2 million online activists (http://www.moveon.org for more info). The movie is about an hour long. At 8:30pm, we will be able to participate in a conference call with the director, Robert Greenwald, the Move On Team, and guests from parties all over the country. Grassroots activism for the 21st Century! You can sign up for this specific event at: http://action.moveon.org/meet/selectmtg.html?event_ids=975 While I haven't seen the video yet, here's some info from a recent email: Uncovered combines expert interviews with over 20 intelligence and military experts, many of whom are speaking out for the first time. Interviewees include: Joe Wilson, the former Ambassador to Iraq who exposed that the famous "16 words" in Bush's State of the Union address about uranium in Niger were false. In retaliation, senior White House officials appear to have blown the cover of Wilson's wife, an undercover CIA agent. John Dean, White House lawyer for President Nixon during the Watergate scandal. Rand Beers, former Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for combating terrorism. David Albright, a physicist, nuclear weapons expert, and former weapons inspector with the IAEA Action team. Rt. Hon. Clare Short, the British Member of Parliament who recently resigned her position as Tony Blair's secretary for international development because Blair did not support a UN coalition to rebuild Iraq. I hope you can make it! Please pass the word and help build the movement for a more democratic, representative government. I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you on the 7th!
