[University of Essex launches new Master programme in Language and the Brain]
The Departments of Psychology and Language & Linguistics will launch a brand new MSc Language and the Brain in academic year 2014-15. This unique MSc provides instruction from both departments, access to a wide range of facilities, and a solid grounding in how the study of language informs the study of the brain and vice versa. As the study of cognition and the brain often focuses on language processes, our joint degree scheme brings together complementary research areas and world-class researchers to provide students with a rigorous, hands-on education in areas that naturally intersect.
This one-year Master's program (90 ECTS credits) is aimed at University graduates with degrees in Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, or a cognate discipline. Students will learn about state-of-the-art views on the neural and functional processes involved in normal language perception, language production, language development, and in developmental and acquired language disorders. For their research dissertation, students are offered the unique possibility to make use of the specialised laboratories for investigating brain activity housed in our Centre for Brain Science (CBS). Facilities include eye tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) labs, as well as neuronavigation facilities.
The University of Essex offers a range of scholarships including the Academic Excellence International Masters Scholarship which supports overseas students from several countries (including United States and Canada) with a scholarship worth up to £4,000.
The University of Essex is top ten in the UK for research excellence and second in the UK for student satisfaction (mainstream universities, National Student Survey 2013).
