/Shadows & Illuminations/ is part of the ethnographic film
series "Afflictions:
<br>
Culture& Mental Illness in Indonesia" and is based on
material drawn from 12 years
<br>
of research by anthropologist and director Lemelson.
<br>
<br>
The film focuses on Nyoman Kereta, a rural Balinese man in his
late sixties who
<br>
suffers from a mental illness. The film explores Kereta's
personal history of
<br>
trauma, loss, and environmental illness, all of which may have
contributed to
<br>
his experience.
<br>
<br>
His story is placed in the context of local community, cultural
beliefs, and
<br>
practices, with his family members and local mental health
practitioners'
<br>
observations and perspectives.
<br>
<br>
Lemelson holds a Ph.D. from the department of anthropology at
UCLA and an M.A.
<br>
from the University of Chicago. He is currently a research
anthropologist at the
<br>
Semel Institute of Neuroscience at UCLA. He is president and
founder of The
<br>
Foundation for Psychocultural Research, which supports research
and training in
<br>
the neurosciences and social sciences. In addition, Lemelson is
director of
<br>
Elemental Productions, a documentary film production company.
