Documentary Film Screening by Hampshire Alumnus Dr. Robert Lemelson Tuesday, April 3rd 5:30pm ASH Auditorium

Shadows & Illuminations: A Balinese Man Haunted by the Spirit World, a film
directed by Hampshire College graduate *Robert Lemelson 79F*, will screen on
Tuesday, April 3, at 5:30 p.m. in Hampshire College’s Adele Simmons Hall auditorium.
Shadows and Illuminations
Dr. Lemelson will be present and introduce the film. The screening is free and
open to the public.
Shadows & Illuminations is part of the ethnographic film series “Afflictions:
Culture & Mental Illness in Indonesia” and based on material drawn from 12 years
of research by anthropologist and director Lemelson.
The film focuses on Nyoman Kereta, a rural Balinese man in his late sixties who
suffers from a mental illness. The film explores Kereta’s personal history of
trauma, loss, and environmental illness, all of which may have contributed to
his experience.
His story is placed in the context of local community, cultural beliefs, and
practices, with his family members and local mental health practitioners’
observations and perspectives.
Lemelson holds a Ph.D. from the department of anthropology at UCLA and an M.A.
from the University of Chicago. He is currently a research anthropologist at the
Semel Institute of Neuroscience at UCLA. He is president and founder of The
Foundation for Psychocultural Research, which supports research and training in
the neurosciences and social sciences. In addition, Lemelson is director of
Elemental Productions, a documentary film production company.
