Kleine's film follows two threads: the life and work of André Gregory,
avant garde theater director and cult film star of Louis Malle's MY
DINNER WITH ANDRE (hence Kleine's title), and Kleine and Gregory's
marriage.

André Gregory is an experimental theater director with an unusual m.o.
Among other things, he rehearses his plays for a very long time--the
latest, Ibsen's The Master Builder, for fourteen years. Decades ago I
saw his stripped down, hyper-present, rambunctious, hilarious Alice in
Wonderland (in rehearsal for just three years), and I was dumbstruck--it
was totally alive. This film focuses on the whole arc of Gregory's
directorial career, and it gives a wonderful introduction to who he is
as an artist. Theater is an ephemeral art, and Kleine gives a sense of
Gregory's important legacy.

Other themes in ANDRE GREGORY: BEFORE AND AFTER DINNER include aging,
art making, family, money, truth and storytelling--a joyful smorgasbord
of Kleine and Gregory's lives and passions. Filmmaker Kleine both
narrates and appears on camera as subject.

Kleine is a truth teller--clear-eyed, funny and loving--and her films
are instructive for students whose work engages personal narrative. Her
first full-length film, PHYLLIS AND HAROLD, is a courageous examination
of her parents' angry and disappointing 59-year marriage.

She has received awards and fellowships from the American Film
Institute, Iowa Independent Film Festival, Jewish Eye (Israel),
MacDowell Colony, and New England Regional Fellowship Program. She has
taught filmmaking at Boston College, Harvard University, the Museum
School in Boston, and the New School for Social Research.

Kleine's films have been exhibited at international festivals including
Telluride, Seattle, San Francisco, Boston, Vancouver, Santa Fe, and
Provincetown and have shown at the Film Forum, Walter Reade Theater at
Lincoln Center, Knitting Factory and Anthology Film Archives in NYC, The
Music Hall in Los Angeles, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Institute of
Contemporary Arts in London, and Center d'art Contemporain in Lyon,
France. Her film /Doug and Mike, Mike and Doug/ was broadcast on PBS's
POV Film Series.

  Warmly,

Ellie Siegel
