The Women of Color Leadership Network, a program of the
Center for Women & Community at the University of
Massachusetts Amherst proudly presents 10th
Anniversary Body Politics, an award winning original
theater production by and about women of color. Body
Politics explores a range of contemporary issues
including: the intersectionality of social identities, cultural
appropriation, discrimination and racism, manifestations of
internalized oppression, sexuality, violence, as well as feelings
around body image, hair texture, skin color and self esteem. These
issues are presented with a serious intellectual and emotional
commitment as well as wisdom and humor. Sisterhood, pride, courage
and resistance are woven throughout the tapestry of this
production.

Body Politics 2013 features a documentary about Body
Politics over the years through the eyes of a number
of participants in the program for the last 10 years. This year’s
show will also include performances by four women of color who
have worked with one another throughout the Fall semester to share
their stories and perspectives through storytelling and creative
writing. The projects culminated in the creation of this year’s
production. Leslie Saulsberry, a doctoral candidate at the School
of Education here at UMass, has been the facilitator for Body
Politics 2013. Beverly Eugene and Tiffany Joseph,
former participants for multiple years in the program, serve as
the Artistic Directors of Body Politics production
for this year.
