Dear Friends,
It is with regret that today I must announce the resignation of Jessica
Gifford, who is leaving her position of Director of the Wellness Center
& Sexual Offense Services Coordinator. Jessica's last day at Hampshire
will be Monday, 26 November.
For the last seven years Jessica has exuded infectious calmness, fierce
advocacy, admirable multitasking, and respected professionalism in her
multiple roles at Hampshire. In August 2005 Jessica started at
Hampshire as the Director of Community Health and Wellness. Shortly
thereafter her responsibilities grew to include coordinating sexual
offense services. Jessica was incredibly instrumental, which is an
understatement, in the college's development and ongoing review of the
campus' Sexual Offense Policy, which was created in 2006. As Jessica
shared with me, this was the professional highlight of her time at
Hampshire. The college's policy has been referred to as a model by our
sister colleges over the years. As Jessica's colleague for the last
seven years and current supervisor, I have always been in awe of the
creativity that Jessica infuses into her seemingly challenging tasks of
providing education on difficult social topics that include substance
and tobacco use, sexual consent and offenses, eating disorders, and
overall physical and mental well-being. Over the years, Jessica has
mentored effective leadership, communication, and advocacy among so many
students through her supervision of student workers and volunteers of
the former Counselor Advocates program, the Wellness Center, the
Sexperts, the Backrub Club and the Dandelion Den; as well as through the
many workshops and EPEC courses she has led on active-listening and
communication skills. "I love working with students and I'll miss the
Hampshire community greatly."
Jessica's departure is a significant loss for our community. Jessica's
seven years of work at Hampshire though leaves our community with a
strong foundation and high expectations for /promoting holistic health
and wellness in the Hampshire community//./ A campus announcement
later this month will be sent with updated information about interim
resources for the sexual offense services and wellness center services
as it is our goal to ensure seamless campus support after Jessica's
departure. Jessica will be joining the Amherst College community in a
newly created position, Mental Health Educator.
Please join us in sending our best wishes to our colleague and friend by
attending her farewell party that will be held on Thursday, 15 November
from noon-1:30pm in the Franklin Patterson Hall Lounge.
Sincerely,
Melissa Scheid Frantz
