OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO MEET WITH FORMER VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE

Dear Students,

What issues would you like to discuss with Vice President Al Gore, or what questions would you like to ask him?

As you know, Al Gore, the 45th Vice President of the United States, is coming to campus to participate in the celebration of Hampshire College and inauguration of our president, Jonathan Lash, on Friday, April 27th. He and Jonathan are long-time friends through their work together on environmental issues.

Both Jonathan and Mr. Gore believe that your generation is crucial to the very future of the earth, so Jonathan has invited Mr. Gore to join him in meeting with students while he is here on the 27th. They are both eager to have a conversation about large-scale trends and key issues, and to hear students' ideas about how to best effect positive change in the world.

In order for this conversation to be meaningful, we will restrict it to a small group of no more than 20 students, who will be selected anonymously based on a written statement of interest. If you would like to participate, please write a paragraph (a half-page is plenty) addressing these questions: If you could have a conversation with Vice President Gore, what would you want to talk about? What ideas would you want to share with him? Then please send your paragraph to me at bward at hampshire.edu by Friday, April 13th, at 4:30 p.m. I will separate out the statements and give them as a group to Jonathan, who - without seeing any names - will choose up to 20 based on content he thinks will generate the most interesting conversation. I will then individually contact everyone who has participated to let you know the outcome.
