*Men and condoms in the time of HIV and AIDS*(110mins)

A creative documentary filmed in South Africa, Kenya and Sierra Leone

to stir and support discussion among men and boys about sexual
well-being and safety

*PROTECTION*brings alive tensions, contradiction and realities
surrounding condom use for men and boys in these times of HIV. The film
(and its ‘extras’ and website) offers glimpses into attitudes and
emotions of men of different backgrounds and ages in South Africa, Kenya
and Sierra Leone, in rural and urban contexts, and the challenges and
realities of sexual protection that men face in so many places. It
provides moving insights into perceptions and debates about condoms that
resonate across African countries and place men and boys at risk of
contracting HIV or of being ill-prepared to manage well their HIV
positive status. As it explores different ways of thinking and arguing
about condom use, PROTECTION invites its viewers to think again about
the importance of sexual protection for boys and men in African
countries where millions of men, women and children continue to be
affected by HIV and AIDS.

The film (with versions in 7 languages - including Chichewa, Zulu,
Swahili and Hausa) has been made as a resource for use in HIV awareness
/ prevention work in a range of contexts in sub Saharan African countries.

Launched in Pretoria, Oslo, Harare, Nairobi and Maputo at the end of
last year, already some 4,500 copies have been requested and distributed
to African initiatives and organizations.*http://www.protectionthefilm.com*

Jill Lewis, executive producer and project co-ordinator for the film,
has worked in gender-focused HIV prevention building since 1986 – since
2001 in a range of African contexts. She will introduce the film
briefly, the challenges of the initiative and be available for
discussion after. Working over several years with a network of African
and international HIV educators, Sonke Gender Justice in S. Africa,
partners in Kenya & Sierra Leone, she collaborated with South African
Director Francois Verster and Producer Neil Brandt to develop this
creative documentary resource.
