Malena's DIV III thesis was titled Re-framing Our Reflections: Dominican Narratives of Overcoming Internalized Oppression which focused on utilizing testimonios, as well as, Critical Latino Theory, Critical Race Theory, and Queer Theory to discuss internalized oppression within the Dominican community in the island and in New York City in terms of race and homophobia. She obtained a master's degree in social work from Columbia University School of Social work in the spring of 2017 and worked with families experiencing homeless in New York City in the family shelter system.
