Hello Everyone,
On Friday a person named Mujaheed Jenness-Clunes was trespassed from the
library. Their ID photos are attached at the bottom of this message. What
does it mean to be trespassed? The trespass notice that this person
received stated the following: ""This letter is to inform you that,
effective immediately, you are hereby prohibited from entering any property
or buildings owned or leased by HC, including property located within the
towns of Hadley, South Hadley, and Amherst, MA. Should you violate the
terms of this trespass notice and enter any area under the control of HC,
you will be subject to arrest and prosecution under the MA Trespass
statute, Chapter 266, Section 210. " This individual signed and dated the
line that indicated that the trespass order was issued in hand, as opposed
to certified mail.
If you see this person in the library, or anywhere else on campus, please
call Campus Safety immediately at 413-559-5424. Matt, Nebraska and I, as
well as several other library staff, all saw this person in the library, so
we could help identify them if we are in the building. When you call
Campus Safety, one or two Campus Safety Assistants (CSA), or possibly a
Health and Wellbeing Assistant (HWA) will respond to your call. All they
will do is ask the person some questions, like their name so they can check
if they are a current student. If they are not a student, they generally
ask what they are doing on campus and what they are doing in the library.
How did this person get trespassed if visitors who are not members of the
Hampshire community are welcome to use our library? On October 19
this person made comments to one of your coworkers about being in the mob
and putting hits out on people. These comments felt threatening and we
called Campus Safety. A CSA came to the library and tried to have a
conversation with this person, but they ran out of the building. They
came back this Thursday afternoon. They were seen pacing and walking in
and out of the library. They also hung up drawings of cartoon characters,
many of which are holding guns or other weapons, on our bulletin boards.
The person left the building for a little while, but staff called Safety
when they returned in the evening, because of their odd behavior and not
knowing why they were hanging their drawings in our building. A CSA did
have a conversation with them and decided they were not a threat, so they
were allowed to stay in the library that evening. On Friday morning one of
your coworkers and I realized that this person matched the description of
someone who was texting photos of their genitals to their friend. The
identifying factor that this person was wearing baggy blue pants with
mandalas on them. Rachel and I saw this person out on campus on Friday
morning, still wearing the same blue pants. We called Campus Safety, and
two CSAs responded. They had a conversation with this person, gave them a
copy of the trespass order, and made sure they boarded the bus to leave
campus.
Under what circumstances might you want to call Campus Safety to check on
a patron who is in the library? To some degree, you have to rely on your
instincts. If someone seems to be impaired by drugs or alcohol and
seems to be wandering around campus by themself, you want to call so that
they don't accidentally injure themself. You always want to call when
someone says something that could be interpreted as threatening to you or a
patron. You will want to call if someone becomes belligerent and
combative. It sometimes feels uncomfortable to have to decide if you
should call and ask Campus Safety for help. Do know that there is never a
wrong reason to call Safety. As I stated earlier, they will only come and
ask the person questions to determine if they pose any threat to themselves
or anyone else in the library. Two staff from Safety and Wellbeing should
respond to each call. In part it's for their own protection in case
someone becomes combative, and it's also for the sake of having two
different perspectives so that the responding staff make the best decisions
for that particular situation.
I did place a printed copy of these ID photos in the headcount binder so
that we always have access to them. If you are ever working with another
student and without a supervisor, remember that there is a copy of the
staff contact list in the headcount binder as well. You can always call me
or any other supervisor if you are faced with a situation and you are
unsure how to handle it.
I can say that in the time I've worked in this library, we've had several
visitors trespassed from campus. I can't think of an instance when one has
returned. The trespass notice is usually a good deterrent from making
people want to return to campus. Since this person has been trespassed,
we've been finding more of their drawings on the bulletin boards throughout
the library. Safety is going to keep a file of all of the drawings that we
find, and we will keep checking our boards to make sure that we don't see
new drawings being posted. If you find any in the library or on campus,
please give them to me and I will forward them to
Safety.
Please check in with me, Matt, Nebraska, or Rachel if you have any
questions or concerns about the content of this email. Our director of
Campus Safety and Wellbeing, Lisa Herod, is also happy to speak to any of
you as well.
Best,
Suzanne
