Hello All,

There are two events happening in the library today and tomorrow.
Today is the Writers Reading at 4:00. A reminder message from Rachel
Beckwith follows. Tomorrow there is a talk at noon given by an alumn,
Rich Schneider, titled Reshaping Scholarly Communication: Why Faculty
Should Support Open Access Policies. A description of that event
follows Rachel's message. Of course, if you like the Library facebook
page like some of your coworkers you will get invitations to these
events there!

Thanks,

Suzanne

 From Rachel:

Dear Library staff,
I hope many of you will be able to attend this event in the library on
Wednesday, October 3 (mark your calendars!) at 4 pm. Four of our
Hampshire faculty (Annie Rogers, Heather Madden, Uzma Aslam Khan, and
Michael Lesy) will be reading from their work, and a reception (food
and wine!) will follow. Hope to see many of you there-- the postcard
is attached (thanks Andrew!). Please spread the word.

You can rsvp on our Library Facebook page:

Info about Rich Schneider's talk:

Please join us in the library on Thursday, October 4 for a lunchtime
talk on open access with Rich Schneider, Hampshire alumnus (87F), and
an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the
University of California at San Francisco (UCSF)

Abstract: The predominant system for scholarly communication has
become economically unsustainable, restrictive, and critically limited
in its ability to disseminate Faculty research. Despite the
diminishing budgets of Colleges and Universities, there
remains a real need to access increasing amounts of scholarly
materials. The costs of purchasing such materials continue to rise
exponentially due largely to aggressive practices of many commercial
publishers who extract billions of dollars in profits every year from
the business of scholarly communication, particularly in the digital
marketplace. Learn how to develop and implement a faculty policy that
will make your journal publications more accessible and ultimately
help control costs. You can empower viable alternatives to the present
system, regain control over your publications, and increase the reach,
visibility, and impact of your research.
